Glendale install new SpeedBind 420 Perfect Binder to Digitalab.
Multi awards winning Digitalab specialise in photography printing for bespoke high end celebratory albums such as weddings, births and school yearbooks. They also offer print to canvas, wall art and framing. Established over 75 years ago they have been involved in many changes in photography and print technology over that long period.
Digitalab were looking for a perfect binding solution and approached Glendale Presentation Solutions for advice. Mike Brydon, director of Digitalab continues ‘I’ve known Mark and the team at Glendale for many years, they have supplied us with numerous products all of which have benefited our business. At first, I asked Mark what Glendale’s’ offering would be on a PUR binder as my understanding was that that PUR was the product that would bind our quality 170gsm full colour digital printed wedding albums best. Mark mentioned that whilst PUR can offer the best adhesion for perfect bound books, in many cases it’s not actually necessary. He mentioned that vast improvements have been made in EVA glues and there was a specific product available, when used with a great binder, would do what we needed. This sounded great, I was aware that cleaning of PUR binders after use can be very time consuming, and this would eradicate that negative’.
Mike arranged for samples to be produced on the new SpeedBind range of perfect binder machines recently launched in the UK by Glendale. ‘Whilst I wasn’t sceptical of the quality, I must admit that we were blown away when the samples returned. Obviously, we tried the pull test and lay flat features, and they were perfect. Mark had mentioned that the SpeedBind offered a 20 milling and 2 notching knife disc that vastly improved the spine preparation before the glue penetration. With the benefit of side gluing and using the glue Mark recommended, the quality was amazingly good’
Mark at Glendale continues ‘We researched the SpeedBind range for around 9 months. We took our time as it was very important to us that we supplied a quality product that our customers could have faith in. Our head engineer stripped the machines down and spent a long time testing the components and quality of the parts, all of which were excellent’. Mark mentioned the benefits of the range ‘It’s available in two models, basically an A4 spine length and A3 spine length. Whilst we don’t expect many customers to want to bind A3, we have seen in a huge increase in A4 landscape requirements, this is where we expect the larger machine to be popular. The specification of the models is the same, spine and side gluing, great milling and notching, fastest in class speeds, touch screen control and adjustable clamp pressure are all benefits for the user. Production times are reduced, so great for business productivity too”.
Digitalab ordered the SpeedBind 420 model after receiving the samples. Mike continues ‘After placing our order we received delivery with operation training within a week. The install went well, and our team were running the machine within a few hours. We had thought for a few years that we needed to update the way we perfect bind books and this binder will massively speed up the process and increase the quality. A win, win”
